'THE PRESENT HAS NO DIMENSION IN TIME' (Oil on Canvas -790 x 490mm)
When we think of the present we see a period of time we have direct access to through our field of consciousness. It is as if a spotlight was shining on an area, once the spotlight moves however, what was in light is now in darkness, that is, in the past. What we will shine the light on next is in the future. Perceptually though, we cannot define the Past, Present and Future in these terms. We may perceive an event with our senses but once the external stimulus has crossed the threshold of perception it becomes memory. We can therefore say that the present is but a threshold between the past and future. It follows that consciousness includes an amount of anticipation or prediction of the future and an amount of memory of the past.
In the language of psychology we can say that at the threshold is the perceiving subject, that is the ego, and the darkness behind beginning with memory, is the unconscious, the light in front, consciousness.
Note
At the time this image was painted my knowledge and perception of the psyche was linear. Since that time it has become apparent that the psyche is circular or spherical in nature. Indeed, the darkness before one's birth is the same darkness after one's death, the difference being that a person has been conscious of existing at death..... SOLD
